What is Canine Conditioning and Rehabilitation?

It is a growing, but not widely known, field. It is not a medical treatment, but it can address soft tissue, strength, and balance impairments as it relates to injury or aging to help your dog live its best, most healthy life!

If your dog presents with any of these mobility issues, conditioning and rehabilitation may work for them.

Difficulty standing from lying down.

Difficulty using the stairs.

Difficulty getting out of the car.

Slipping on hard flooring in home.

Decreased willingness to sit.

Difficulty jumping to the bed/couch.

Stumbling or skipping intermittently while walking.

Decreased willingness to go for walks or inability to walk same distances.

It all started with Nimbus

Nimbus was the beloved pet of Rachel Shenk DPT, CCRT. Nimbus was 12 years old when he woke up one morning unable to use his back legs. The options for Nimbus at that time were either the use of inflammatory and pain medications or an expensive MRI and neurosurgery. Rachel, who has been a physical therapist since 2005, did not want to expose Nimbus to the risk of imaging and surgery unless it was necessary. She opted for medication and instinctively began to use physical therapy techniques she had been using with humans for years to assist with her dog’s ability to function. Nimbus regained the use of his back legs and had two more years with his loving family. Through conversations at work with other therapists, Rachel learned about canine rehabilitation, and the rest is history!
